Was ist AV1?

AOMedia Video 1 (AV1) ist ein offenes, lizenzfreies Videocodierungsformat, das ursprünglich für Videoübertragungen über das Internet entwickelt wurde. Es wurde als Nachfolger von VP9 von der Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) entwickelt, einem 2015 gegründeten Konsortium, dem Halbleiterfirmen, Video-on-Demand-Anbieter, Produzenten von Videoinhalten, Softwareentwicklungsunternehmen und Webbrowser-Anbieter angehören. Die AV1-Bitstrom-Spezifikation enthält einen Referenz-Videocodec. Im Jahr 2018 führte Facebook Tests durch, die sich den realen Bedingungen annäherten, und der AV1-Referenz-Encoder erreichte eine um 34 %, 46,2 % und 50,3 % höhere Datenkompression als libvpx-vp9, x264 High Profile bzw. x264 Main Profile.

Wie VP9, aber im Gegensatz zu H.264/AVC und HEVC, hat AV1 ein lizenzfreies Lizenzmodell, das die Übernahme in Open-Source-Projekte nicht behindert.

AVIF ist ein Bilddateiformat, das AV1-Komprimierungsalgorithmen verwendet.

Der Hauptnachteil von AV1 ist derzeit, dass es sehr neu ist und die Unterstützung in den meisten Browsern noch nicht integriert ist. Additionally, encoders and decoders are still being optimized for performance, and hardware encoders and decoders are still mostly in development rather than production.

AV1 Profiles

AV1 defines three profiles for decoders which are Main, High, and Professional. The Main profile allows for a bit depth of 8- or 10-bits per sample with 4:0:0 (greyscale) and 4:2:0 (quarter) chroma sampling. The High profile further adds support for 4:4:4 chroma sampling (no subsampling). The Professional profile extends capabilities to full support for 4:0:0, 4:2:0, 4:2:2 (half) and 4:4:4 chroma sub-sampling with 8, 10 and 12 bit color depths.
