The Self-Sufficient SmartCam: AI Processing Onboard
We created Flussonic SmartCam — an intelligent camera with built-in analytics that doesn’t require a separate server. It can recognize objects, match them with a database, and immediately trigger the required action — for example, opening a barrier or sending an event to a third-party system. All processing and decision-making happen directly on the device, without external software.
SmartCam is especially useful for projects with technical and financial constraints. It transmits events as lightweight JSON files, works with minimal network load, and saves footage locally when a connection is temporarily lost. Use it to organize access control points and monitor remote sites, automate parking systems, and more — in both normal and extreme conditions.
The Challenge of Remote Monitoring
Facilities in remote areas — pipelines, access control points, construction sites — all face the same problem: how to enable monitoring and analytics when there is no reliable broadband connection? A lightweight, easy-to-install solution that doesn’t require constant maintenance is essential. These kinds of projects inspired the creation of SmartCam.
Why traditional solutions don’t work here:
- A server is required on-site for video processing.
- Technical specialists and physical access to equipment are needed for maintenance.
- Broadband network connectivity is required to use analytics.
These solutions are expensive — and often infeasible in remote regions.
SmartCam: On-Device Analytics
With SmartCam, we integrated video analytics directly into the camera, eliminating the need for servers or extra infrastructure.
Key Features
- Integrated analytics: Video intelligence in a compact device.
- Lightweight data transmission: Sends events as small JSON packets, even with low bandwidth.
- Advanced object recognition: Detects people, vehicles, animals, and other objects.
- Modular analytics: Supports third-party analytics for custom use cases.
- Offline reliability: Local storage ensures video is recorded even when the connection is lost.

Applications
SmartCam was inspired by extreme environments, but its use cases go far beyond:
- Construction sites: Monitor equipment and access with minimal infrastructure.
- Security systems: On-device facial recognition without relying on the internet or external databases; detect potential threats onsite.
- Infrastructure monitoring: Keep watch over pipelines, substations, and other remote assets.
- Temporary installations: When surveillance needs to be deployed quickly or the camera needs to be moved around.
Technology
SmartCam runs on Flussonic’s custom firmware, optimized specifically for video analytics. Its development is based on over 10 years of feedback from monitoring system operators, ensuring reliability, performance, and usability in real-world conditions.
Cost Benefits
SmartCam significantly reduces the cost of intelligent video surveillance in remote locations:
- Fewer components: No external servers or analytic modules required.
- Low deployment costs: Lightweight, compact, and ready for the field.
- Minimal bandwidth consumption: Works with weak network connections.
- Simple maintenance: Fewer failure points, remote management.
- More efficient control: More data with fewer resources.
